Wetlands and Waterways: Kim Passalaqua

6 October - 1 November

“The air fills with the raucous, joyful calls of cockatoos as evening settles over the water and light drifts into shadow and birdsong ripples across the billabong”.

I’m drawn to the quiet strength of nature, especially the Murray River, the wetlands and billabongs. These living landscapes speak to our shared identity. In the stillness of early mornings, or the late afternoon, with shifting light and birdsong, I find connection — a grounded, gentle way of being that deeply informs my painting practice.

These waterways always stir my imagination. There’s something endlessly captivating about the way light, water, and movement shape this landscape. When I paint alongside the water, time slows, I find myself observing the gentle flow of the river, the calls of cockatoos, and the shimmer of gum leaves in the breeze. Through my paintings, I hope to share that same sense of stillness, beauty, and connection that the river gives me.

The river’s often tranquil waters and the birds that call it home have been a constant source of fascination for me, and I have tried to capture the essence of the wetlands and billabongs and their inhabitants in my paintings. When I paint en plein air, I listen to the river flowing by, the cockatoos calling and sometimes, just the stillness delights me in this outdoor studio – to be part of this landscape is an empowering journey.
