Cardboard, 10,000k’s and Seven Weeks – Daniel Butterworth

4 March 2025 - 31 March 2025

Daniel Butterworth is a figurative and landscape artist based in Victoria, Australia, with over 20 years of rich artistic practice. Born in 1973, he spent his formative years shaping his artistic identity through studies at Bendigo TAFE and later earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from La Trobe University in 1997, followed by a Diploma of Education in 2006. Now working from his studio in Kyneton, Daniel’s passion for art is expressed through the unconventional method of using house paints on cardboard. This eclectic approach aligns him with avant-garde sensibilities reminiscent of greats like Edvard Munch, Ralph Balson, and Ian Fairweather, mirroring their experimental techniques and bold application.

Butterworth’s artwork is notably rich, expressive, and gestural, showcasing a unique and powerful portrayal of humanity and connection. He draws on personal experiences, often incorporating images of himself in his work to explore social, political, and personal themes. His commitment to painting is unwavering; as he notes, “Painting is my life, I paint every day on whatever is available”.

His impressive body of work has garnered recognition, establishing Butterworth as a finalist in prestigious awards such as the Archibald Prize, Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, Black Swan Portraiture Prize, and various others including the Lester, Percival, Jackarandah, Arthur Guy, Kilgour, and the Muswellbrook Portrait Prize, among others. He has also been a finalist in the Naked and Nude and Alice Prize competitions.

Cardboard, 10,000k’s and Seven Weeks is an exhibition born from personal experiences, where each piece has been created as a direct reaction to moments and locations that stirred an emotional connection within Daniel.
